Do tape-in extensions damage your hair?

Updated: May 6, 2023

Hair extensions have evolved to look and feel more natural than ever before. With so many options available today, it's beneficial to take the time to consider hair type, lifestyle, as well as the look you’re striving to achieve when choosing the best type of hair extensions. Today we’ll be focusing on tape-in extensions, a very popular choice in the hair industry, and whether or not wearing them is good for your hair.

What are tape-in extensions?

Tape-ins are medical-grade adhesive wefts that are pre-taped and usually 1-2 inches wide. The adhesive is .XXmm thin, allowing for super lightweight and flat extensions that are comfortable and easy to blend with natural locks. In addition, all of our hair extensions have cuticles facing the same direction which results in less tangles, knots, and matting.

How long do tape-in extensions last?

Tape-in extensions are semi-permanent. In comparison to other types of extensions, they take less work to maintain however proper daily care is needed as with all extensions. Tape-in extensions typically last 10-12 weeks, depending on how fast the hair grows before it’s time to move them up. However, synthetic or non-remy tape-in extensions will not last nearly as long due to the fact that they are made with low quality and processed hair, which requires frequent replacements and more care. Lower-quality adhesive can also effect longevity. At The Art of Extensions, we only carry premium quality 100% cuticle-intact extensions that can be reused several times before needing to be replaced. Our higher quality hair extensions will not only last longer, they will save you time and headaches as time goes on.

How are tape-in extensions installed?

After removing the backing on the adhesive, a thin strip of natural hair is placed in-between 2 strips, to create a sandwich between the extensions. For thinner hair, 1 weft with single-sided tape can be used. Due to the wefts being 1-2 inches wide, having the existing hair sectioned carefully and evenly is an important step to make sure the tape-ins are applied and secured properly to create a well-blended, natural look. The whole application process will typically take about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on level of experience and how many packs of hair are used.

PRO TIP : Leave a bit of room between the adhesive strip and scalp to prevent applying tape-ins too close to the hairline. Otherwise, you may have a hard time during the removal process, possibly causing damage to the original hair and to the extensions - the further the bond is from the root, the more likely it is to get tangled or tugged. Having the extensions aligned with the roots is of utmost importance because if may feel uncomfortable and may drag or slip out prematurely if they are crooked.

So, do tape-in extensions damage your hair?

Correctly applying the extensions can significantly reduce the damage done to the real hair. Tape-ins that are installed incorrectly or not cared for properly can cause breakage and other harm to the original hair. The existing hair needs to be strong and healthy enough to bond to the adhesive, especially if it’s the first time wearing tape-in hair extensions. It's also important to help replenish and re-hydrate hair after removing extensions with hair masks and other products. Attempting to apply or remove tape-in extensions at home is probably the biggest mistake for most people because it is a complex process. Tape-in extensions are safe as long as it is installed correctly by a professional, and cared for properly.
